National Flag Day

Flag day is celebrated on June 14th every year, this was the day the United States adopted the American flag by the continental congress in the first flag act on June 14, 1777. Pennsylvania is the only state where June 14th is a federal holiday. New York also considers the second Sunday in June every year a state holiday for Flag Day. In 1968, when the Uniform Holiday act established 11 new holidays and three-day weekend holidays, Flag Day was left out. The United States began to celebrate Flag Day in Pennsylvania on June 14th, 1937. In June of 1886, Bernard Cigrand wrote an article titled “The Fourteenth of June” in the old Chicago Argus newspaper. This was the first attempt to make June 14th a holiday. Bernard Cigrand is now known as the “Father of Flag Day”.
